WHAT IS A SLEEVE GASTRECTOMY?

A sleeve gastrectomy, otherwise known as a gastric sleeve is a form of weight loss surgery. Gastric sleeve surgery is currently the most popular form of bariatric surgery and is known to have significant results with over 95% of patients losing substantial weight post-surgery, which has led to a surge in sleeve gastrectomy popularity. Sleeve Gastrectomy is currently battling obesity everywhere and below we will go through the details of this surgery.

HOW DOES A GASTRIC SLEEVE WORK?

Sleeve gastrectomy surgery, also known as bariatric sleeve surgery, involves the surgeon removing a large portion, around 75-80%, of the patient's stomach. This gastric sleeve procedure allows the patient to reach a feeling of fullness quicker and with fewer quantities of food, as the stomach has been reduced significantly and fewer gut hormones are being produced. Because of this, the patient will begin to lose large quantities of weight but it is important to remember that the truth about a gastric sleeve is that it is not a magic solution on its own and it is important to change your lifestyle to maintain weight loss and follow-up with your surgeon and dietitian. Life after a gastric sleeve includes a new way of eating, a new way of life, and a new sense of self.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Benefits of a gastric sleeve

People often have a lot of questions in regard to a sleeve gastrectomy, such as “Is a gastric sleeve worth it?” or “What are the pros and cons of a gastric sleeve?” which are normal questions to ask. The key to maximizing the benefits is to stick to the post-operation goals, such as sticking to your gastric sleeve weight loss timeline, committing to your surgeon's recommendations as well as understanding and practicing your sleeve gastrectomy diet. But when adhering to the requirements, the results can be startling and you can lose enormous quantities of weight. Gastric sleeve results after 3 months to a year and beyond can be startling.

checkBy following the recommendations, post-gastric sleeve patients can expect to see significant weight loss and a reduction in health risks associated with obesity. The question "Is a gastric sleeve safe?" can be answered by looking at the positive results. With a low complication rate and consistent success with patients, the wonders of this surgery are very well documented. But it's important to follow the long-term diet after gastric sleeve surgery to ensure continuous weight loss and overall long-term health. Studies have shown that gastric sleeve weight loss is effective in reducing the risk of obesity-related conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, and hypertension.

Unfortunately, most patients pre-surgery did not have the best quality of life as being obese shackles you from participating in certain activities. Not only does this condition make your physical life difficult, many often suffer from the mental aspects of obesity such as a complete lack of confidence and high levels of depression. A benefit to gastric sleeve weight loss is that individuals often see a significant improvement in their quality of life after the surgery. But like any surgery, there are some gastric sleeve side effects which include nausea and vomiting. But post-procedure an overwhelming majority of patients report a positive change in their well-being and see an improved quality of life after gastric sleeve surgery.

It is important to understand what to expect after gastric sleeve surgery such as maintaining a healthy weight loss routine and sticking to a liquid diet during the gastric sleeve recovery time. But one of the most overlooked benefits post-surgery is the reduction or elimination of sleep apnea, which a large number of obese individuals suffer from. This is due to fewer interruptions during sleep which is backed up by various studies on the matter. The following are some of the benefits found post-surgery:

  • Reduction in insomnia
  • Reduction or elimination of sleep apnea
  • A fall in fatigue during the day
  • Increase in awareness levels

Obesity can have a significant impact on an individual's self-esteem. The physical and emotional strain of carrying excess weight can lead to feelings of insecurity and low self-worth. Gastric sleeve surgery can help individuals struggling with obesity regain their self-confidence. With a high success rate for gastric sleeve, many patients report positive changes in their self-esteem, both in the short term and even 10 years later. Gastric sleeve before and after pictures often showcase the dramatic transformation in both physical appearance and self-confidence.

REDUCTION IN HEALTH RISKS

checkAs we mentioned at the outset it is the other conditions that arise as a result of obesity that pose the most serious risk to the patient. Unless the obese person is able to reduce their weight by a substantial degree those weight related conditions could ultimately prove fatal. Many obese persons suffer from hypertension, respiratory conditions, type 2 diabetes and heart problems. In addition every 100 pounds of excess weight a person carries puts an estimated 400 pounds of additional pressure on the hip, knee and ankle joints when walking. As a result obese persons are commonly faced with serious mobility issues as well which only serves to make matters worse. In the aftermath of GSS patients typically gain a measure of control over these serious conditions. Those afflicted with Type 2 diabetes often see a stabilization of and return to normal blood sugar levels. Those who had been contemplating knee or hip replacement are often able to find effective treatments that won’t require replacing these vital joints. The threat of heart attacks is also reduced, respiratory conditions typically ease and, because mobility is restored, the patient is able to exercise and achieve a far higher degree of overall health.

  • Help with high blood pressure
  • Help with heart disease
  • Sleep apnea
  • Improved cardiovascular health
  • Relief of depression
  • Joint pain relief
  • Improve fertility
  • Alleviate other medical conditions

Risks of a gastric sleeve

Gastric sleeve complications: Some of the risks involved include bleeding, infection, blood clots, and leaks in the gastrointestinal tract. Although these risks are very low.
Gastric sleeve failure rate: While the success rate for gastric sleeve surgery is very high, there is a small chance of the surgery not achieving the desired weight loss results.
Dumping syndrome after gastric sleeve: Some patients may experience dumping syndrome, which is characterized by symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal cramps after eating sweet or high-fat foods. This can be managed by changing your diet and medication.

MORE SERIOUS RISKS

In very rare cases there are some serious risks that can take place following the procedure, although these risks are very low in probability:

  • Perforation of stomach or intestines
  • Dilution of the esophagus
  • Hernia
  • Gallstones
  • Death (very rare)

checkCOSMETIC SIDE EFFECTS

Cosmetic considerations are an important aspect of gastric sleeve surgery. One of the most noticeable cosmetic effects of the surgery is the presence of gastric sleeve scars from the incisions made during the procedure. These scars can be small, but they are permanent and may be visible. The recovery time for gastric sleeve surgery can vary, but it usually takes several weeks for patients to fully heal and for the gastric sleeve incisions to fade. Additionally, sagging skin can be an issue for some patients, as monumental weight loss can cause the skin to lose elasticity. This can be rectified through additional procedures such as body contouring surgeries.

checkWHO IS ELIGIBLE?

When considering gastric sleeve surgery there are many questions that spring to mind, such as “What are the BMI requirements for a gastric sleeve?” or “How many gastric sleeve requirements are there?”. These questions are common, but without having a consultation with a medical professional you can only look at the generic requirements which are as follows:

  • BMI - One of the key requirements for gastric sleeve surgery is meeting certain criteria in terms of Body Mass Index (BMI). To be considered a candidate for the surgery, a patient's BMI must typically fall within a certain range (usually 30+) and they must also meet other gastric sleeve surgery requirements too.
  • Previous weight loss failures - Another indication of whether the surgery might be required is if the individual has tried previously to lose weight and unfortunately failed.
  • Health-related issues - If the individual might be suffering from damaging health issues related to their current weight.

Again, without having an assessment it is hard to know whether you are eligible for the surgery. Another aspect to acknowledge is that it's important to understand the differences between the options available, such as gastric sleeve vs gastric bypass or the consideration of a vertical gastric sleeve (VSG Surgery). It is also crucial to keep in mind that meeting the gastric sleeve BMI requirements does not automatically make someone a candidate for the surgery, as there are many other factors to consider as well.

checkTHE PERFECT SCENARIO

A gastric sleeve surgery can lead to significant weight loss, with patients typically losing 60-80% of their excess body weight. The key to achieving the best results is not just the surgery itself, but also adhering to a gastric sleeve meal plan and making necessary lifestyle changes, such as regular exercise. Even if a person is not fastidious in their adherence to the advice given by the medical team, they can still expect to see good results. However, those who are dedicated to making the necessary changes as advised by their doctor may see even better results. It is also important to note that gaining weight after gastric sleeve surgery is still possible if the patient does not maintain a healthy diet and lifestyle.

checkASSESSING IF THE PATIENT IS PREPARED

Ensuring that the patient is prepared for the surgery is key and will be a major focus of the medical team. The team will ensure that all questions such as “What is VSG surgery” or “what is the average weight loss with gastric sleeve” are answered to give the patient a full understanding of how weight loss surgery works.

An important aspect that not many realize is the recommended time lapse before trying for pregnancy after gastric sleeve. It is recommended that patients wait until a significant time has passed before trying to conceive. This is not only safer for the baby, but the weight gain during pregnancy can have negative results on the effectiveness of the surgery. Similarly, undergoing a gastric sleeve after pregnancy should only be considered 12-18 months post-pregnancy.

checkGETTING THE BEST RESULTS FROM YOUR GASTRIC SLEEVE AFTER SURGERY

A lot of patients ask us “can the gastric sleeve be reversed?” or “is gastric sleeve reversible?” The simple answer is no. That’s why it is important to follow your doctor's guidelines after surgery to ensure the best possible results. This includes making the necessary lifestyle changes, such as maintaining an active lifestyle and following your recommended gastric sleeve diet. As well as following your doctor's advice regarding the healing process. Often counseling is advised to help you deal with changes and emotional stress. Our team will be available to answer any questions you have during your postoperative period.

PHYSICAL ACTIVITY

It is extremely important to avoid participating in any strenuous activities in the first weeks after gastric sleeve surgery as it can cause the wounds to open up and lead to serious complications. Putting any stress on the staples or the sutures too soon after surgery can impede the healing process and prolong recovery time. Your doctor will examine your physical gastric sleeve results after 1 month to consider whether you can go back to normal physicalities.

checkTHE PROCEDURE

A laparoscopic gastric sleeve is performed in a way that ensures the post-op gastric sleeve incisions heal quickly and safely. During a laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy, the surgeon will typically make several small incisions. A viewing tube, surgical instruments, and a tiny camera and light will then be inserted. This method of surgery is preferred due to shorter recovery times and reduced risk of complications, including infection, compared to one large incision. The sleeve gastrectomy surgeons will then fill the abdomen with CO2 to move the stomach wall away from other organs, repositioning the liver out of harm's way before proceeding with the surgery on the stomach.

The stomach is then separated from surrounding tissue to view the space behind it, avoiding damage to the spleen and pancreas. The surgeon raises the "greater curve" of the stomach and measures and removes unwanted stomach mass, leaving a reduced stomach resembling a banana shape and size. The cut is then stapled shut, usually with additional material for leak and bleeding prevention. Care is taken to avoid narrowing near the incisura angularis. The staple line is inspected for malfunction or leaks. Eventually, the surgeon removes the portion of the stomach and closes the incisions with sutures after ensuring everything is satisfactory. Vertical sleeve gastrectomy is carried out under general anesthesia and typically takes 1 hour.

What is a gastric sleeve?

The gastric sleeve, also known as a sleeve gastrectomy, is a form of weight loss surgery that has many benefits including increased life expectancy in some patients. How does gastric sleeve work? The surgery significantly reduces the stomach size, resulting in reduced food and calorie intake. However, it’s important to be certain before undergoing this surgery, as gastric sleeve revision is not possible.
